The first of Booker’s limited edition bourbon bottlings for 2020 is here, “Granny’s Batch,” named for Booker Noe’s mom, Margaret Beam Noe, also known as “Granny Noe” to the extended family. Per the company, Margaret was instrumental in getting Booker his first job at the distillery where he would go on to become Master Distiller.
This release is aged 6 years, 4 months, and 21 days, and as always it’s bottled uncut and at cask strength. Let’s try it.
Tons of barrel char on the nose here, boldly beefy with rich layers of savory spices, heavy on notes of cloves and marjoram. Based on the heaviness of the nose, the whiskey feels like it’s going to be quite austere and restrained, but once you dig into the palate the bourbon really opens up. A mammoth bouquet of flowers, a slug of salted caramel, and butterscotch all unfold quickly. More savory char hits on the finish, but ample sweetness — with a note of toasted marshmallow — keeps the experience bright and engaging.
